Swimwear Fabric Performance Testing: The B2B Buyer’s Guide to Physical Test Standards and Acceptance Limits

A buyer we worked with last season did everything the textbooks tell you to do. She approved a lab dip under two light sources. She locked the fibre blend at 80% recycled nylon and 20% elastane. She specified 200 GSM and signed off a fit sample that draped beautifully on the model.

Four months after the collection landed, her returns inbox filled up with the same three complaints: the bottoms had grown a full size in the seat, the side seams showed white gaps when stretched, and the black had gone chalky at the waistband after a summer of pool use.

Nothing on her spec sheet was wrong. The problem was what the spec sheet never asked for. Colour tests tell you whether a shade survives. Weight tells you how much fabric you are buying. Neither tells you whether the fabric still returns to shape after 3,000 stretch cycles, or whether the seam holds when a size 16 customer pulls it over wet skin.

That second half of the story is physical performance testing, and most B2B swimwear buyers never specify it. This guide covers the tests that matter, the standards they run under, the acceptance limits commonly written into swimwear programmes, and how to get all of it into your tech pack without turning every order into a lab bill.

Colour tests and weight specs cover less than half the risk

If you have already read our swimwear colourfastness testing guide and our fabric weight (GSM) buyer’s guide, you have two of the three legs of a fabric specification. Colour tests answer will it still look right. Weight answers how much body, opacity and cost am I getting.

Physical performance testing answers the question your customers actually complain about: will it still work after they wear it.

Swimwear is one of the most punished categories in apparel. A single garment faces sustained stretch of 60% to 150%, chlorinated water, salt, sunscreen oils, UV, sand abrasion and the mechanical stress of being pulled over wet skin. A woven blouse never sees that load profile. This is why generic apparel test packages, copied from a supplier template, routinely miss the failures that actually kill swimwear repeat orders.

Physical testing is also the cheapest insurance in the entire product development chain. A full swim performance panel costs less than the freight on a single pallet, and it runs before you commit to bulk fabric.

The two families of swimwear fabric testing

Splitting your test plan into two families makes it far easier to argue about and far easier to budget.

Chemical and colour family — colourfastness to chlorinated water, seawater, perspiration, light and rubbing; restricted substances; pH; formaldehyde; azo dyes. Physical and mechanical family — stretch, recovery, dimensional stability, strength, seam integrity, surface durability, wet opacity and drying behaviour. This is the family almost nobody specifies, and it is the subject of the rest of this guide.

The physical tests that decide whether swimwear survives a season

1. Stretch (elongation)

How far the fabric extends under a defined load, measured in both course and wale directions. Common methods are ASTM D2594 for knitted fabrics and ASTM D3107 or EN/ISO 14704-1 for elastic fabric assessment.

Why buyers care: elongation drives the pattern. If your fabric extends 160% and your grader assumed 120%, every garment comes out tight, and no amount of fit-sample iteration fixes it. This is the single most common cause of a fit sample that passes and a bulk run that does not. It should be locked before the pattern work described in our size and fit specification guide.

2. Recovery and growth

After extension is released, how much of the stretch comes back and how much stays as permanent deformation. Growth is normally reported as a percentage after a defined hold time — 30 seconds and 60 minutes are both used.

This is the test that would have saved the buyer in the opening story. Bagging out at the seat, waistband and bust is a recovery failure, not a fit failure. Commonly specified limits sit around 90% or better recovery, with growth held under 5% to 8% depending on the product.

3. Dimensional stability after washing (and spirality)

Shrinkage and growth after laundering, run under AATCC 135 or the ISO 6330 / ISO 5077 combination, with specimen marking to ISO 3759. Spirality — the twisting of a circular-knit tube that makes side seams spiral around the body — is assessed alongside it.

Swim programmes should be tested after at least three wash cycles, not one. Most dimensional movement in elastane-rich knits shows up on cycles two and three.

4. Bursting strength

For knitted swim fabrics, bursting strength (ASTM D3786 diaphragm method, or ISO 13938-1 / -2) is more meaningful than the tensile strip tests used for wovens, because it loads the fabric multi-directionally the way a body does. Reserve tensile methods such as ISO 13934-1 or ASTM D5034 for woven board shorts and woven trims.

5. Seam slippage and seam strength

Seam slippage (ISO 13936-1 / -2) measures whether yarns pull away from the stitch line, producing that white gap along a stressed seam. Seam strength methods include ASTM D1683 and ASTM D3787.

Seam performance is a fabric-plus-construction result, so the specimen must be sewn with the actual production stitch type, thread and seam allowance. Test a flatlock specimen if you are buying flatlock. Our seam construction guide covers how stitch choice changes the outcome.

6. Pilling

Surface fuzzing and ball formation, assessed by Martindale (ISO 12945-2 or ASTM D4970), pilling box (ISO 12945-1) or random tumble (ASTM D3512), and graded on a 1 to 5 scale.

Matte, brushed, textured and jacquard swim surfaces pill far more readily than smooth tricots. If your range leans into texture, this test moves from optional to mandatory.

7. Abrasion resistance

Cycles to failure or appearance change under Martindale (ISO 12947-2) or ASTM D4966. Relevant anywhere the garment rubs a hard surface: the seat of training suits on pool decks, board short seats, and any style with contrast panelling.

8. Snagging

Mace snag testing (ASTM D3939) pulls a spiked ball across the fabric. Critical for open-structure knits, mesh panels, and the power mesh used in support layers — see our lining and support construction guide.

9. Chlorinated-water degradation of the elastic component

This is the test that separates a genuine pool-grade fabric from a marketing claim. Colourfastness to chlorinated water (AATCC 162, ISO 105-E03) tells you the dye survived. It says nothing about whether the elastane survived.

The meaningful protocol is exposure-then-retest: immerse the fabric in chlorinated water at a defined concentration, temperature and duration, then re-run stretch, recovery and bursting strength and report retained performance against the unexposed control. A fabric that keeps its colour but loses 40% of its elastic power after exposure will still fail your customer.

Ask for retained-elongation figures, not just a colour grade. 10. Wet opacity

There is no single dominant international standard here, which is exactly why it gets skipped and why it generates a disproportionate share of returns. Most serious programmes run an agreed in-house method: wet the fabric to saturation, mount it over a standard contrast card or grey scale under controlled lighting, and grade transparency against a signed reference swatch.

Specify it as an in-house method with a physical reference standard attached to the fabric approval. Light shades, low GSM and single-layer constructions are where this fails. It interacts directly with weight, so read it together with the GSM guide.

11. Drying rate and moisture management

Drying time (AATCC 199) and liquid moisture management (AATCC 195) matter for rash guards, swim-to-street shorts and any range sold on a quick-dry claim. If your marketing copy says quick-dry, you want a number in a file, particularly for markets that police performance claims.

Test matrix: standard, purpose and commonly specified limits

Treat the limits below as the ranges typically negotiated in swim programmes rather than regulated minimums. Final figures belong in your fabric approval document, agreed with the mill in writing.

Which tests belong on which product category

Running every test on every fabric is how test budgets get cancelled. Match the panel to the failure mode that actually threatens the product.

When to test: three gates, three different purposes

The first gate is the one that pays for itself. Testing at fabric approval means a failure costs you a sample and two weeks. Discovering the same failure at pre-shipment means a full production run is already cut and sewn. Slot this into the sequence described in our sample order process guide.

A practical compromise most programmes settle on: full panel at fabric approval, a short panel — recovery, dimensional stability, chlorine retention — at bulk lot, and physical checks only at pre-shipment alongside the AQL inspection and the standard pre-shipment quality checks.

Who pays, and how to keep the cost sane

Three approaches are all defensible, as long as the answer is written down before the order:

  • Buyer pays at approval, supplier pays for re-tests. Cleanest incentive structure. The mill has a reason to pass first time.
  • Supplier pays, buyer nominates the laboratory. Cost sits in the fabric price. Insist on naming the accredited lab so the report is not produced in-house.
  • Shared, split by gate. Buyer funds approval-stage qualification, supplier funds lot verification and pre-shipment.

Four levers that cut the bill without cutting the protection:

  1. Test the fabric, not every colourway. Physical properties belong to the construction. Run the full panel once per construction, then verify colour-sensitive tests per shade. Shade work belongs in lab dip approval.
  2. Reuse valid reports. A report under 12 months old on the same construction from the same mill is usually acceptable for a repeat programme. Ask for it before you commission new work.
  3. Combine submissions. Labs price per submission as well as per test. Send one package for the whole season’s fabric library.
  4. Retire tests that never fail. After three seasons of grade-5 pilling on a smooth tricot, downgrade it to a periodic audit.

How to read a test report without getting fooled

A report that says PASS in bold on page one can still be worthless. Six things to check every time:

Who issued it. An accredited third-party laboratory report carries an accreditation number and scope. A mill’s internal sheet is data, not verification. Both are useful; only one settles a dispute.

What was actually submitted. Match the fabric code, construction, weight and colour on the report against your approved specification. A report on a 190 GSM version does not cover the 210 GSM you ordered.

Conditioning and pre-treatment. Elastane knits behave differently before and after relaxation. If conditioning is not stated, the numbers are not comparable between reports.

Wash cycles. A dimensional stability result after one cycle looks flattering and predicts nothing. Insist on three or more.

Pass-fail versus report-only. Many lines on a standard package are report-only — the lab prints a number and passes no judgement. If your specification carries no limit, there is nothing to fail against. This is where buyers wrongly believe they are protected.

Direction and units. Stretch and recovery are directional. A single figure with no direction stated is an incomplete result.

Test date and lot reference. A report with no lot number cannot be tied to the goods in your container.

Writing performance testing into the tech pack and the PO

Testing you did not write down is testing you cannot enforce. Two documents carry the load.

In the tech pack, add a fabric performance page listing every test, the method, the direction where relevant, the acceptance limit and whether it is pass-fail or report-only. In the purchase order, convert the specification into commercial terms: which gate requires which panel, who commissions and pays, which laboratory is acceptable, the remedy if a lot fails, and the claim window after arrival. One clause worth adding explicitly: no substitution of fabric construction, elastane type or finish without written approval and a fresh test panel. Substitution — usually well-intentioned, when a mill runs short and offers something “the same” — is the most common route to a lot that fails a test it passed six months earlier. Component-level equivalents apply to your trims, hardware and elastic too.

Five buyer mistakes we see most often

  1. Accepting a colour test as proof of chlorine resistance. Different failure mode entirely. Ask for retained elongation after exposure.
  2. Testing one wash cycle. Elastane knits move on cycles two and three. One cycle flatters the mill and misleads you.
  3. Testing the fabric but not the seam. Fabric can pass and the sewn seam still slip. Submit sewn specimens using production stitch settings.
  4. Never specifying wet opacity. It has no headline standard, so it falls off the list, then drives a return rate nobody can explain.
  5. Leaving every line report-only. No limit means no failure and no remedy. Assign a number to anything you would reject goods over.

A sixth, quieter one: specifying a test panel and never checking the report against the specification. Sending the file to procurement without a five-minute review defeats the purpose.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum viable test panel if my budget is tight?
Four tests: stretch and recovery, dimensional stability after three washes, seam slippage on a production-sewn specimen, and wet opacity against a signed swatch. That combination catches bagging out, sizing drift, seam gaps and see-through — the four complaints that generate most swimwear returns.

Is chlorine resistance a fabric property or a dye property?
Both, and they fail separately. The dye can hold its shade while the elastic component degrades, and the reverse also happens. Colourfastness to chlorinated water covers the shade; an exposure-then-retest protocol on stretch, recovery and bursting strength covers the elastic performance. Specify both.

Do I need testing if my supplier already holds a certification?
Certifications such as restricted-substance or recycled-content schemes verify chemistry and supply chain claims, not mechanical durability. They are necessary and not sufficient. A fabric can be fully certified and still lose 30% of its recovery after a season of pool use.

How much should a full swimwear physical panel cost?
It varies by laboratory, market and package structure, so treat any single figure with suspicion. The useful framing is relative: a full panel at fabric approval typically costs a small fraction of the freight on one bulk shipment, and a fraction of the margin lost on a single style with a high return rate. Ask two accredited labs for a package quote on your specific test list.

Can I rely on the mill’s in-house test data?
Use it for development speed and screening, then verify with an accredited third party before you commit to bulk. In-house data is fast and free, which makes it ideal for narrowing fabric candidates. It has no standing if you later need to reject a shipment.

Which tests should be repeated on every bulk lot?
Recovery, dimensional stability and chlorine retention. These three are the most sensitive to yarn lot changes, dye process variation and finishing drift, which is exactly what changes between an approved hanger and a production run.

How do physical test results affect my grading and fit?

What happens if a bulk lot fails a test after production has started?
That depends entirely on what your purchase order says. With a defined limit, a nominated lab and a stated remedy, you have a documented route to rework, discount or replacement. Without those clauses you are negotiating from scratch, and the goods are already sewn. This is the practical reason to put testing into the PO rather than leaving it as an email agreement.
